In short

C2 · Proficiency. The CEFR describes C2 as the level at which you understand practically everything with ease and can reconstruct arguments from spoken and written sources in a coherent way. You express yourself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, and make finer shades of meaning clear even in complex matters.

What you can do at C2

Listening

  • You understand a radio debate with dialect, irony and quick changes of speaker without effort.
  • You follow a political cabaret show and understand allusions to politics and culture.

Reading

  • You read specialist literature, legal texts or literature and grasp style and intention.
  • You compare several sources and notice where they contradict each other.

Speaking

  • You chair a discussion and word criticism so that it stays factual and polite.
  • You explain a complex matter so simply that non-specialists understand it.

Writing

  • You write a specialist article, a review or an expert report in an appropriate style.
  • You edit other people’s texts and improve wording and structure.

Typical grammar and vocabulary at C2

These topics come up again and again at C2. In our test, 6 of the 50 questions are at C2; most of them check grammar and vocabulary like this.

  • Modal particles in the right tone: „doch“, „ja“, „eben“, „halt“
  • Switching between everyday language, technical language and formal style
  • Complex sentences with several subordinate clauses that the reader can still follow
  • Idioms and fixed expressions: „etwas auf die lange Bank schieben“
  • Word formation: understanding and forming derivations and compounds that are not in the dictionary

Vocabulary

  • Fine synonyms: „behaupten, versichern, beteuern“
  • Technical language of your field and switching it into everyday language
  • Figurative language, irony and allusions
  • Register: formal, factual, colloquial

Three sample questions at C2

Task 1

Mit seiner Kritik hat er den Nagel auf den Kopf ___.

  1. getroffen
  2. geschlagen
  3. gelegt
  4. gesetzt
Show answer

A „getroffen“: The fixed expression is “den Nagel auf den Kopf treffen”: to hit the nail on the head, i.e. say exactly the right thing.

Task 2

Er hat das Angebot nicht abgelehnt, ___ er es angenommen hätte.

  1. ohne dass
  2. als dass
  3. so dass
  4. statt dass
Show answer

A „ohne dass“: “Ohne dass” negates the second action: he neither turned the offer down nor accepted it.

Task 3

Wer in einem Gespräch „zwischen den Zeilen liest“, …

  1. versteht auch, was nicht ausdrücklich gesagt wird.
  2. liest einen Text besonders schnell.
  3. überspringt unwichtige Stellen.

Show answer

A „versteht auch, was nicht ausdrücklich gesagt wird.“: The idiom means picking up hints and unspoken intentions. At C2 you understand meanings like this reliably, even in fast conversations.

Official C2 exams

If an employer, an authority or a university asks for proof of C2, you need the certificate of an official exam. Common ones are:

  • Goethe-Zertifikat C2: Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom
  • telc Deutsch C2
  • ÖSD Zertifikat C2
  • Goethe-Test PRO (adaptive test by the Goethe-Institut, result between A1 and C2)

Which exam counts is decided by the institution that asks for proof. Ask before you register.

How precisely does our test measure C2?

Our test includes six questions at C2. That is enough for a first indication but not for a precise measurement at this level, especially as writing and speaking are not tested. To prove C2 you need an exam such as the Goethe-Zertifikat C2: Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom, telc Deutsch C2 or the ÖSD Zertifikat C2.

C2 does not mean „like a native speaker“. The CEFR describes learners and does not use native speakers as its yardstick; the levels overview explains this in more detail.

How long does it take to get from C1 to C2?

There is no fixed number of hours, and a course alone rarely leads to C2. The step from C1 to C2 comes mainly from years of varied use of the language: reading, writing and discussing in different registers.

Many people reach C2 only in the areas where they work with German every day. That is normal: C2 exams also require a wide range of topics and text types.

Questions about C2

Do I need C2 for my job?

Rarely. For most jobs and for studying, B2 or C1 is enough. C2 is mainly expected where language itself is the work; ask the institution that wants proof.

How many C2 questions does the test include?

Six. C2 is the result for 90 percent correct answers or more across the whole test. For precise proof you need an exam.

I am a native speaker. Do I reach C2 automatically?

Not necessarily in the test, and even less so in an exam. C2 exams also require demanding writing in set formats, which takes practice.

What is the difference between C1 and C2?

At C1 you use the language flexibly and effectively. At C2 you understand practically everything with ease and get fine differences in meaning exactly right.

What does the C2 test cost?

The test itself is free and you start without signing up. Your result and the certificate with a verification ID are unlocked after purchase, from €14.99. There is no subscription.

Can I prove C2 with the certificate?

The certificate is a placement result with a verification ID: it shows the level you reached in our test, and anyone can check it online. Whether that is enough is decided by whoever you show it to. Authorities and universities usually require an exam such as Goethe, telc or ÖSD.
